After 11 years, Akshay Kumar has returned with the sequel of Oh My God (OMG). Written and directed by Amit Rai, the movie is slated to release on August 11, alongside Sunny Deol's Gadar 2.

The trailer

The trailer of the sequel, OMG 2 was released on August 3. Watch it here:

The OG OMG

The first part showed Kanji Lalji Mehta (Paresh Rawal) locking horns with religious figures to recover his losses which they said were an 'act of God'.  In the sequel, it is Kanti Sharan Mudgal (Pankaj Tripathi) who takes the battle to court after his son is expelled from the school due to an immoral act.

Kanti Sharan is shown as a family man and devotee of Lord Shiva, who defends his own case.

Alongside him is Yami Gautam, who plays a prosecution lawyer.

The trailer shows Kumar playing the role of messenger of Lord Shiva, who comes to the aid of Shiva's devotee on earth.

A satirical social drama

Just like the first part, the sequel also attempts to show the realities of religion and society with a blend of humour.

While Kanji Lalji Mehta (Paresh Rawal) had tickled our bone by questioning nonsensical rituals in the first part, Kanti Sharan Mudgal (Pankaj Tripathi) will try to expose the harsh realities of the modern-day education system in the sequel.

CBFC cuts and changes

As the movie showed the portrayal of Hindu deity Lord Shiva and takes names of other religious scriptures, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) made sure that all the controversial scenes and dialogues were removed or altered.

  • As such, Akshay Kumar, who was initially billed as playing Lord Shiva himself in the movie, is now playing a messenger of the god.
  • A few-second introduction in the trailer clarifies that Akshay is playing a messenger and not Shiva himself.

After the movie Adipurush was heavily criticised for its objectionable content related to Hindu deities, and was followed by the Oppenheimer-Bhagawad Gita row, the CBFC ensured that they take no chances with OMG 2.

Hence, 13 minutes of OMG 2 have been removed from the movie by the CBFC.

Moreover, the scenes with nudity featuring the Naga Sadhus were also replaced by the CBFC.

Will Paresh Rawal be missed?

There is no doubt about the fact that Paresh Rawal as Kanji Lalji Mehta was the heart and soul of the first movie. He carried the movie on his shoulders for the entire time and delivered a splendid performance. Moreover, Umesh Shukla's writing and direction kept the viewers engaged.

The sequel is written and directed by Amit Rai and the storyline is entirely new.

Will OMG 2 end the trend of flops for Akshay Kumar?

OMG 2 will also be a big test for actor Akshay Kumar, who has delivered a string of flops in the recent times

Hist last hit was Rohit Shetty's Sooryavanshi in 2021. Since then, the Khiladi actor has given five flops in a row: Atrangi Re, Bacchan Pandey, Samrat Prithviraj, Rakshabandhan and Selfie. His movies, Cuttputli, Laxmii and Bell Bottom were directly released on OTT.

Kumar as producer has huge hopes from OMG 2.
