Ted Lasso Season 3 is here. But what makes the sports comedy-drama such a universal favourite?

With the premiere of its third and final season, the Apple TV original has captured the hearts of audiences and critics alike. Despite being centered around the sport of football, the show has resonated with viewers who may not have had a prior interest in the game. This begs the question: what makes Ted Lasso so special?

First and rather obviously, the show's success should probably be directed towards its titular character. Jason Sudeikis’s Ted Lasso is a genuinely kind and optimistic person who believes in the power of empathy and understanding. Ted Lasso is a breath of fresh air in a world where cynicism and sarcasm often dominate popular culture. His positivity is infectious and his interactions with other characters on the show are both heartwarming and hilarious.

In addition to Sudeikis, the show boasts a talented and diverse cast of relatable and endearing characters; each with their own unique personalities and quirks. From the emotionally guarded Rebecca, played by Hannah Waddingham, to the lovable and slightly dim-witted Roy, played by Brett Goldstein, each character is given their own moment to shine and contribute to the show's overall narrative.

Of course the show's success also lies in its impeccable ability to balance comedy and drama - making you laugh out loud one minute and bring you to tears the next. The show doesn’t shy away exploring complex themes of mental health, grief, and toxic masculinity albeit with a deft touch, never veering too far into melodrama. The series writers are able to imbue even the most heart-wrenching moments with a sense of optimism and hope.

The series's setting also plays a role in its success. Ted Lasso is set in the UK, specifically in the fictional town of Richmond. While the show does touch on some cultural differences between the UK and the US, it doesn't rely on tired stereotypes or easy jokes. Instead, the show presents a nuanced portrayal of life in a small English town, complete with its own unique quirks and traditions. This setting provides a backdrop for the show's many memorable moments, from pub singalongs to unexpected friendships.

Finally, timing. Ted Lasso premiered on Apple TV+ in August of 2020, during a time when many people were looking for something uplifting and hopeful to watch. The world was (and still is) grappling with a pandemic, political upheaval, and a host of other issues. Ted Lasso provided a much-needed escape, a reminder that there is still good in the world and that people can come together to achieve something great.

The show's popularity has only continued to grow with the release of its second season in 2021. Along the way, the show has picked up numerous accolades, cementing its place as one of the most celebrated shows in recent memory.

The first season of Ted Lasso won several major awards, including the Golden Globe for Best Television Series - Musical or Comedy, as well as a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series. The show's star, Jason Sudeikis, also took home a Golden Globe for his performance Hannah Waddingham and Brett Goldstein were also recognized with Critics' Choice Awards for their supporting performances.

The second season of Ted Lasso has been just as successful, if not more so. The show once again won the Golden Globe for Best Television Series - Musical or Comedy, with Jason Sudeikis taking home another Globe for his performance. The show also won three Critics' Choice Awards, including Best Comedy Series, and seven Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Sudeikis. The show's supporting cast was also recognized, with Brett Goldstein winning for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series and Hannah Waddingham taking home the trophy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.

The series has resonated with viewers for a myriad different reasons. From its relatable and endearing characters, balanced tone, unique setting, and timely release all contribute to its success. But perhaps the most important factor is the show's message: that kindness and empathy can go a long way in making the world a better place. Under divisive and trying circumstances, Ted Lasso offered a glimmer of hope.

The third season of Ted Lasso is now streaming on Apple TV.
