22 gold medals at CWG 2022 for India: Breaking down the Birmingham haul

India finished fourth at the Commonwealth Games 2022 winning 61 medals in all. 22 gold, 16 silver and 23 bronze medals marked India's journey in Birmingham.

Ending on a high: On the final day of CWG 2022, India won four gold, one silver and one bronze medal. The gold winners on the final day were: 

  • PV Sindhu
  • Lakshya Sen
  • Sharath Kamal, Sreeja Akula
  • Satwik Sairaj Rankireddi and Chirag Shetty

Legendary table tennis star Sharath Kamal turned out to be the most successful Indian athlete in Commonwealth Games with 4 medals, including 3 gold. He won the second men's singles titles on the last day of Birmingham 2022 Games, finishing on a high.

Th stars who won gold: Wresting and weightlifting contributed huge in the medal tally of India, especially in the absence of shooting.

  • India won six gold medals in wrestling with Sakshi Malik, Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat and three others winning gold.
  • In weightlifting, India won three gold medals with Mirabai Chanu, Jeremy Lalrinnunga and Achinta Sheuli winning gold medals.
  • In badminton and boxing too, Indian athletes kept the country's flag flying high, winning 3 gold medals in each. In women's singles in badminton, PV Sindhu clinched the gold medal while Lakshya Sen won gold in men's singles. In men's doubles, Satwik Sairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty won the gold.

  • In boxing, Nikhat Zareen proved her mettle once again as she won the gold in the women's 50 kg category. Similarly, Nitu Ghanghas won gold in the women's 48 kg category.

  • In cricket, Indian women's cricket team won the silver medal.  
  • In the track and field men's triple jump sport, India's Eldhose Paul created history by winning gold medal. In the 3000m steeple chase, Avinash Sable won India's first silver medal.
  • India also won 2 medals in the Lawn Bowls sport, including a gold for the women's four team.
