Seems like the Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh cricket rivalry is headed for another drastic turn. There is considerable anger among Sri Lankan cricket fans against Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan, who had used the ‘Timed Out’ rule to dismiss Angelo Mathews during their match on November 6, 2023.
Angelo Mathews’s brother Trevis Mathews has spoken out against Shakib Al Hasan in harsh terms. He has said that Shakib Al Hasan dare not go to Sri Lanka, or else stones will be thrown at him.
What Trevin said
- “We are very disappointed. Bangladeshi captain has no sportsman spirit and did not show humanity in the gentleman's game,” Trevin told the website bdcrictime.com.
- He further said, “Shakib is not welcome in Sri Lanka. If he comes here to play any international or LPL (Lanka Premier League) matches, stones will be thrown at him, or he will have to face the annoyance of the fans.”
- Trevin, who has played club cricket in Sri Lanka, defended his brother Angelo, “Angelo was within his crease in the stipulated time but it was not his fault when the strap of his helmet was broken.”
- Shakib Al Hasan had been part of the LPL in 2023 for the first time, and he was part of Galle Gladiators.
- There’s no update on his participating in the next year’s league.
What the umpires said
- The umpires were taken aback when Shakib Al Hasan went for an appeal. But since it was well within the rules, they did consider his appeal.
- “When it comes to timed out, the incoming batter has to be in the position to receive the ball within the two minutes. The TV umpire monitors the two minutes, and then he will relay the message to the standing umpire. In this instance, the batter wasn’t ready within those two minutes, even before the strap became an issue for him,” the umpire said.
Shakib defends himself
- While several cricketers have taken a stand against Shakib Al Hasan, the cricketer had defended himself by saying that he felt that it was right.
- “It’s in the laws. I don’t know if it is right or wrong. But I felt like I was at war. I had to take decisions to make sure my team wins, and whatever I had to do, I had to do,” Shakib said.
- Shakib’s match against Sri Lanka was also his last in the World Cup as the Bangladeshi skipper has left due to a fracture in his index finger.
- Bangladesh will play the last match of the group stage against Australia on November 11, 2023.
