Just two days before the start of Commonwealth Games 2022, India's medal hopes got a jolt as star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra decided to pull out of the event due to an injury.

Chopra had won a historic silver medal at the World Athletics Championship in the US on Sunday.

Why he decided to pull out: Chopra had pulled his thigh muscle during his 88.13m throw that won him a podium finish. He underwent an MRI scan on Monday and was advised a month's rest.

"Following his participation in the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Mr Chopra had had an MRI scan done on Monday and, based on it, he has been advised a month's rest by his medical team," IOA Secretary General Rajiv Mehta said.

Silver medal at World Championship: The 24-year-old had become only the second Indian athlete to win a medal at World Championship, after long jumper Anju Bobby George, who won a bronze medal in 2003 in Paris.

Chopra, India's first Olympic gold medal in athletics, has broken the national record twice in three competitions this year.

India's javelin medal hopes at CWG: After Chopra's decision to leave the CWG 2022, India's Rohit Yadav, who finished 10th at the world championships and DP Manu will represent India in the men's javelin throw event in UK's Birmingham.
