Commonwealth Games Birmingham 2022: What you need to know

The 22nd Commonwealth Games will begin in England's Birmingham on 28 July, 2022. The Games will finish after 11 days, on August 8.

India has been one of the top performers in the Games, and is at the fourth place in terms of medals since  the Commonwealth Games started.

Who all are participating: Over 5,000 athletes from 72 countries and territories will compete in 19 sports and 280 medal events .

Opening ceremony: The Commonwealth Games opening ceremony will start at 3 am IST on Friday (July 29).

New sports included: Cricket returns to the Commonwealth Games for the first time in 24 years, with the first women’s 20 tournament to be played at the event.  3x3 basketball, 3x3 wheelchair basketball and para table tennis have also been added to

History of Commonwealth Games: The Commonwealth Games, is an international multi-sport event involving athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations. The event was first held in 1930, and, with the exception of 1942 and 1946, has taken place every four years since then.

  • The Commonwealth Games were known as the British Empire Games from 1930 to 1950, the British Empire and Commonwealth Games from 1954 to 1966, and British Commonwealth Games from 1970 to 1974.
  • In 2018, the CWG became the first global multi-sport event to feature an equal number of men's and women's medal events.

Most dominant teams at CWG: Australia has been the most dominant team in the Commonwealth Games' history with a total of 2,415 medals, which includes 932 Golds, 774 Silvers and 709 Bronzes.

England is at second place with 714 gold medals, followed by Canada at third place and India at fourth. India has won 181 gold medals, 173 silver and 149 bronze medals so far.

India at CWG: A strong 322-member Indian contingent will be taking part in the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Olympic champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra will lead the 37-member Indian athletics team.

  • The country's biggest contingent was during the Delhi Games in 2010 when a total of 495 athletes took part in it.
  • The most successful Indian athlete at the CWG to this date is shooter Jaspal Rana, who has won 15 medals at the Games.
  • Since the 2002 edition of the Games in Manchester, India has never finished outside the top five of the medal tally
