FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar: 2.45 million tickets sold, 5,00,000 still left

Three months before the start of the Qatar World Cup, ticket sales for football's biggest tournament reached 2.45 million, FIFA said on Thursday (August 18). More than 5,00,000 tickets are still available.

More than half a million of the tickets were sold in the last sales period from July 5-16. The first FIFA World Cup to be held in the Arab world will kick-off on November 20

The tickets for the tournament are being sold on first-come, first-served basis via FIFA.com/tickets.

Who is buying the tickets? FIFA said the biggest number of allocated tickets were for group stage matches like Cameroon v Brazil, Brazil v Serbia, Portugal v Uruguay, Costa Rica v Germany and Australia v Denmark.

Fans living in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the USA, Mexico, the UAE, England, Argentina, Brazil, Wales and Australia secured the biggest number of tickets.

Next ticket launch date: The launch date for the next sales phase will be announced in late September, FIFA said. Over-the-counter sales will also start in Doha after the launch of the last-minute sales phase.

The cheapest tickets for fans from outside Qatar are priced at 250 riyals (Rs 5,311). Fans need a confirmed ticket purchase to book places to stay in Qatar through an official tournament website.

Qatar World Cup: Qatar will be hosting the event from November 20 to December 18. Many experts had raised concerns that the hot weather of the gulf nation would not be ideal for the game of football. That is why the World Cup is being organised during the winter months for the first time.

FIFA World Cup format: The 32 teams have been drawn into eight groups of four nations. The top two teams from each group will advance to the knockout stages. After the group stage, the tournament will move to a round of 16, followed by eight teams in the quarterfinals, four in the semifinals and then the final.

Four matches will be played each day during the group stage, which will run over a 12-day period.

The groups:

Group A: Qatar, Netherlands, Senegal, Ecuador

Group B: England, USA, Wales, Iran

Group C: Argentina, Poland, Mexico, Saudi Arabia

Group D: France, Denmark, Tunisia, Australia

Group E: Germany, Spain, Japan, Costa Rica

Group F: Belgium, Croatia, Canada, Morocco

Group H: Portugal, Uruguay, Ghana, Korea Republic
