Qatar World Cup: Saudi defender undergoes surgery after getting injured during Argentina game

Saudi Arabia defender Yasser Al-Shahrani's World Cup campaign looks all but over as he underwent an emergency surgery after sustaining facial injuries during his team's historic 2-1 Group C victory over Argentina on Tuesday (November 22).

What happened: During the stoppage time of Argentina game, Al-Shahrani fell to the ground after he collided with his team's goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais.

Al-Shahrani took a brutal knee to the face as the goalkeeper attempt to claim a high ball. He had to be substituted on a stretcher.

Injuries and the surgery: Al-Shahrani reportedly suffered a fractured jaw, broken facial bones and endured internal bleeding due to the collision and had to undergo an emergency surgery.

"Yasser Al-Shahrani underwent a successful surgery at the National Guard Hospital in Riyadh," the Saudi Arabia Football Federation said on social media.

Stunning victory: Saudi Arabia staged a huge upset at Qatar World Cup on Tuesday with 2-1 victory over Argentina, ending La Albiceleste's 36-match unbeaten run. Lionel Messi scored the only goal for Argentina on a penalty, but Saudi Arabia made a stunning comeback in the second half scoring two goals in five minutes.
