India's ace tennis star Sania Mirza on Tuesday announced her withdrawal from the US Open due to an elbow injury. She also said that the injury would also lead to change in her retirement plans.

"Hi guys, a quick update. I just have some not-so-great news. I hurt my forearm/elbow while playing in Canada 2 weeks ago and obviously, didn't realise how bad it was until I got my scans yesterday and unfortunately, I have in fact torn a little bit of my tendon," Mirza wrote on Instagram.

Retirement plans: The 35-year-old from Hyderabad had announced in January that she would be retiring from international tennis at the end of the 2022 season. But now that she is going to miss the US open, she is saying that she will change her retirement plans.

"I will be out for weeks and have pulled out of the US Open. This isn't ideal and it's terrible timing and it will change some of my retirement plans but I will keep you posted," she said in her post.

Performance this year: Mirza, who mostly plays women's doubles and mixed doubles now, had reached the semis women's doubles in Toronto with her partner Madison Key and also played at the Cincinnati Open last week.

Mirza had lost her mixed doubles semi-final in Wimbledon with her Croatian partner Mate Pavic.

Career records: Mirza is India's most accomplished woman tennis player and has won 6 Grand Slam titles. This includes 3 mixed doubles titles and 3 women's doubles.

She had become world number one in doubles during her successful partnership with Swiss legend Martina Hingis. Mirza also reached top-30 in singles with 27 being her career best rank. She had decided to quit singles after a wrist injury and had decided to focus only on doubles.
