1. Don't "fake it till you make it"

  • According to Harvard Business Review, many people who have just entered their first jobs pretend to be more knowledgeable than they actually are - just because they don't want to look stupid in front of their bosses or colleagues. They don't ask questions and think they have to have the answers.
  • However, this isn't true. No one expects you to know everything in your job - you'll learn much faster if you ask questions and showcase a genuine interest in gaining real understanding of something. And ask for help, it's always better to ask than just assume anything. (humble yourself and ask for help whenever needed)
  • Adopt a learning mindset, it will help you in the long run.

2. Focus on building professional relationships

  • Colleagues: Never eat lunch alone. Always take those short-breaks with your colleagues to prevent burnout. It's a two way street, you can always learn from their experiences, learn how to navigate through your job and assigned work or anything else and they can learn from your past experiences. (build your network)
  • Try building a rapport within the professional workspace and you will definitely learn a lot. Anyone you meet at the office, irrespective of their designation can teach you valuable lessons can help you in your career. (maybe you can also look for a mentor in your work place)
  • Manager: It's crucial to establish a positive and productive working relationship with your manager. It's your boss that determines and has an influence over your ability to thrive and succeed in your job.
  • Get to know what your manager's values and what they expect from you, their work style and try to adopt these practices. At the same time, try to create a positive communication channel with him/her.

3. Work hard and be punctual

  • We all have heard that hard work is the key to success, but apart from this, coming off as a diligent, hardworking and dedicated employee is the best indication to your employer about your seriousness and how keen you are to succeed at the workplace.
  • Your hard work and perseverance will earn you the respect of your colleagues and managers.
  • Self-discipline and being and showing up on time is an impressive trait. (no one likes a latecomer)
  • Be punctual whether it's for a meeting or meeting a work deadline, basically establish a strong work ethics.

4. Create a professional persona and look the part

  • Your appearance at the work place matters more than you think. This is because when you speak or make conversation with someone, they tend to judge you based on your appearance and dressing style. (we shouldn't judge a book by their cover, but we're all guilty of doing so)
  • In the first few days of your new job, assess how other people dress, how your colleagues and managers dress and carry themselves whether its in the office or virtually.
  • LinkedIn: It is recommended to have a polished looking LinkedIn profile and your profile picture. (because someone who doesn't know you might checkout your LinkedIn profile and might form an initial perception of you from that)

5. Manage stress and prevent burnout

  • Working full-time is a whole other ball game. Unlike school and university, this bit of adulting can be challenging, stress-inducing and intimidating.
  • Learn to take one step at a time and stay optimistic. Give your 100% and work diligently, but simultaneously learn to de-stress and prevent burnout.
  • Always try to make time for things that you enjoy, physical exercise or anything at all that gives you happiness. (this will prevent burnout and help you achieve more productivity at work)
