How much sunscreen should you apply: A tablespoon? A shot glass?

One skincare product that you must apply every day, without any fail, is a sunscreen. Yes, even on those cloudy days. It protects your skin from sun damage, prevents it from premature ageing and much more.

But there is no clarity on how much sunscreen one should apply on a regular basis. Many skincare experts have come up with different theories to determine the amount of sunscreen that should be used at one time.

Here are some of the famous ones that might help clear some of your doubts:

1. TWO-FINGER METHOD

A few viral videos on social media suggest that you should first put sunscreen on your index and middle fingers from the tip to the end. According to this method, the amount of sunscreen on your index and middle finger is what you need for your face.

2. ONE TABLESPOON

Many experts also approve applying one-third of half a tablespoon of sunscreen on just your face.

3. SUNSCREEN CONTOURING

This method is quite unique. It is supposed to naturally contour your skin. For this, you need to apply a sunscreen of a stronger capacity on the higher points of the face. High points are the cheekbones, forehead, chin and jawline. This method asks you to leave the rest of the parts of your face exposed to the sun.

This method was later criticised by dermatologists for exposing skin to the sun.

Contouring with sunscreen can be harmful for your skin

4. A SHOT GLASS

If you follow the shot glass rule, you require 30 ml of sunscreen, which is equal to a shot glass, for your entire body.

The verdict: Every face is of a different size. So, the amount of sunscreen required also varies. You should apply enough sunscreen to cover your face, neck and ears. You should also re-apply it every two hours. Also, it must be of at least SPF 30.
