What is it with Indian men's fetish for bhabhis?

A friend of mine in Mumbai had a joke that he loved to share on almost all social occasions - about how he lost his virginity to a 40-plus Bong boudi (bhabhi) on a balmy June afternoon in Kolkata. The lady, his landlord's wife, was, by his own admission, dripping sensuality in her sleeveless blouse and sari worn dangerously below the navel, and would always call for him for odd jobs before asking him to join in the bedroom for a game of harmless Ludo, from time to time.

The sexual tension between the 20-something advertising trainee and the older woman was imminent and so my friend joked, like a cheesy deodorant ad where the woman in heat can smell the heady masculine aroma of the man and is sexually aroused, in this case, he started waiting for the scent of her coconut oil-drenched tresses, delaying going to work, just so that he could have a glimpse of her bare back or her swinging hips or see her lips part desirously.

During the day, she would barge into his basement room saying she was reeling under a fainting spell, and would hug him tightly. One thing led to another, and before you knew it, the Bong boudi was a regular fixture in my friend's airless room.

"She taught me well. In fact, she was a lot like Savita bhabhi... a total nymphomaniac, insatiable. Her balding, pot-bellied husband obviously not fulfilling any of her raging hormones, and she was completely desperate to be pleasured.

There were over 60 million visitors to cartoon porn star Savita Bhabhi's site every month.

"She would do anything, she was wild! All these Bong women are horny, even Rabindranath Tagore had a thing for his bhabhi. I mean Satyajit Ray's Charulata was based on his short story about Kadambari Devi who committed suicide consuming opium when the poet got married and their so-called platonic affair died," my friend smirked, reconstructing his official loss of virginity.

In staid, sexually sacrosanct and morally high-handed India, chastity is celebrated as a virtue, but the truth is far from it. Most Indian men, dig older married women, and the proof of the pudding is the way even the government was threatened by over 60 million visitors to cartoon porn star Savita Bhabhi's site every month, banning the hugely popular site in 2009.

But while the moral police have been assuaged by this move, what have we actually achieved in terms of closing the lid on our kinkiest, incestuous fantasies? Just run a casual search on Google with the words in the search bar, sex + bhabhi and there are upwards of ten pages with desi porn content blatantly advertising all sorts of sexual dalliances from pados ki bhabhi, devar-bhabhi sex, Yogita bhabhi sex scandal, Indian bhabhi sex to young Indian bhabhi-mature men sex.

For those who are turned on by the written word, there are a few popular sites. And while we silently shudder at our so-called moral degradation, in response to The Times of India's queries, Pornhub, a leading porn website, has revealed that amongst trends from five cities - New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai and Hyderabad - New Delhi takes the pole in terms of porn viewership with 39.2 per cent of traffic.

The top search terms for smut across India are "Indian college girls", "Indian bhabhi", "Bengali" and "Indian aunty". Mumbaikars, fourth-placed in terms of traffic, are the most Oedipal of porn viewers, 46 per cent more likely to watch videos of older women listed under "MILF".

While there is no doubt that desi is the flavour of the Indian porn-watching population, data with Pornhub claim the top relative category in New Delhi is a**, which the city is 46 per cent more likely to search for than the rest of the country.

The "school" category is also very popular, taking the third place. That Indians like virgin, nubile girls is apparent even from the way in the arranged marriage market girls are unabashedly asked about their so-called virginity status.

"Since I live in Mumbai, guys are curious to know if I have multiple partners and whether I am sexually active or not, especially boys who still stay with their parents," claims 31-year-old marketer Misha Kapoor who works in the telecom sector.

What's perhaps most disturbing about this increasing online porn addiction is the escalating trend of child abuse. Pune-based Nyana Devi Childline is a 24-hour helpline for children in distress, and is supported by the Union ministry of women and child development. It recently completed 15 years of service in the city.

It issued a statement saying that children abusing children, in many cases, are simply "acting out" and recreating scenes they have watched in porn movies, for instance, older brothers forcing oral sex on their toddler siblings, teenage boys and girls fondling their younger counterparts in the neighbourhood, and children being sexually bullied in schools and hostels.

Alarmingly, the age group of victims of physical and sexual abuse cases ranged from one-and-a-half years to 18 years while a majority of perpetrators of the abuse were fathers, teachers and sports coaches, amongst others.

Are our sexual fetishes being manifested in more dangerous ways of child sex trafficking and peadophilia that is simmering even as the newly passed Information Technology Bill makes it illegal to not only create and transmit child pornography in any electronic form, but even to browse it?

The punishment for the first offence of publishing, creating, exchanging, downloading or browsing any depiction of children in "obscene or indecent or sexually explicit manner" in the electronic medium can attract five years in jail and a fine of Rs 10 lakh. Is the nathutharna ritual a primordial right of passage that secretly every Indian man nurses - the image of a coy, untouched bride who does not say "no" and who must exist as a mute sexual prop?

In 2015, India knocked out Canada to grab the third position - after the US and Britain - in visiting one of the world's largest adult websites Pornhub. In its annual review of how people globally view porn, Pornhub revealed that while the US added 11 seconds to their average time spent on watching porn, India - at 9 minutes 30 seconds - recorded a higher average time with a one-minute increase in the duration of each visit.

So even as the Censor Board adds a U/A certificate to a film as innocent as The Jungle Book, and even as we scream Sitahood, there is a dark, sinister, sexual side that is latent in our cultural DNA. The distance between bhabhi and college student is often the demarcation of our innate horniness.
