Before this house was renovated, Barbie's DreamHouse was on Airbnb in 2019, where guests could stay at the property for $60 (Rs 5,000) a night. This was to honour the 60th anniversary of the iconic doll.
The first Barbie doll was launched by the American Toy company Mattel, Inc in 1959. It was in 1962 that Mattel first introduced Barbie's Dreamhouse, a foldable cardboard ranch house.
Since then, Barbie's DreamHouse has evolved over the period of 60 plus years and has kept up with the latest trends.
Barbie's dreamhouses have come to reflect the social, economic and cultural revolution in American life.
Barbie's first bachelorette pad, her dreamhouse (which was not even pink in colour!) had a room, modernist furniture and books, but it did not have a kitchen. This indicated that Barbie was not restricted to being a homemaker, but she was an independent woman who owned property at the time when financial institutions would deny mortgage applications to single women. This house was not built around the domestic roles of women.
Barbie's house got an attractive upgrade after 1974, when the Equal Credit Opportunity Act was passed that banned credit discrimination based on sex and marital status.
Barbie, the Greta Gerwig-directed movie, hits the screens on July 21.
