5 stories from India that bring me joy

1) Dipa Karmakar: Clearly, one of the wow stories from an Olympic year. The journey from Tripura to Rio couldn't have been easy, yet Dipa did it with a smile and so much grace. That she just lost out on a medal doesn't lessen the scale of her achievement in any manner.

2) Deepa Malik: In a year when our Paralympians did us so proud, Deepa stands out. A 46-year-old who overcame all adversities to become an Olympic silver medallist. When I met her with her family, what struck me was her spirit of optimism. That she is on a wheelchair doesn't matter: as she says, “Baby wants gold next time!”

3) Saroj brothers: This is a story of courage and triumph in the face of adversity. The Saroj brothers are to my mind true heroes and symbols of a new India. When I had one of them on my programme last year telling his story, I became teary-eyed. This is the great Indian story.

4) Virat Kohli: I love cricket and cricketers and am researching a book on cricket. So when I found out that Virat Kohli had bought a car for his coach as guru dakshina, I was mighty impressed. The great guru shishya tradition in sport endures.

5) Thebetterindia.com: Every morning, I turn to a website thebetterindia.com since it only gives positive stories of hope and inspiration. It's a good way to start a day. I love this story of women in a UP village who are building their own water embankment because the government failed them. These and many other such stories give me hope in the idea of India.

Have a good day and Happy Diwali to all!
