Monkeypox has affected 19 countries till date, as confirmed by the World Health Organization (WHO). The data also mentions that there are 131 confirmed cases and 106 suspects of monkeypox across the world. With each day, it is spreading to different nations. However, on Monday, WHO said that, “We can stop human-to-human transmission.”

The virus is more common in African countries. Many are still not aware of the virus, its symptoms, complications and much more. To clear all your doubts, here are answers to all your questions.

1. WHAT IS MONKEYPOX?

Monkeypox is a viral disease which is quite similar to smallpox, but less severe. It was first found in central and west Africa, and now it has spread to 19 different countries.

Till now, two strains of monkeypox have been detected. In 2003, there was an outbreak of monkeypox that lead to 71 cases which were transmitted via rodents.

2. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF MONKEYPOX?

There are two initial symptoms of monkeypox: headache and fever. Later the patient may experience back pain, muscle ache and lack of energy.

Within a week or two, the infected individual develops rashes which further lead to pustules. The disease lasts for 2 to 4 weeks.

The incubation period for monkeypox is 6 to 13 days.

People with pre-existing conditions, pregnant women and children are at a higher risk of a severe infection.

3. HOW MONKEYPOX SPREADS?

Monkeypox can spread from an infected individual or animal to a healthy person.

Any direct contact or transfer infected droplets can lead to the spread of the virus.

In Africa, monkeypox was found in different animals including rats, different species of monkeys, squirrels and more.

The disease is less contagious than Covid-19 infection.

4. WHAT IS THE TREATMENT FOR MONKEYPOX?

According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there is no specific treatment for monkeypox. Anti-virals and vaccines are used to prevent outbreaks.

5. IS THERE ANY VACCINE FOR MONKEYPOX?

Vaccine against smallpox can provide protection against monkeypox too. After eradication of monkeypox, getting a vaccine against smallpox is not compulsory.

WHO states that new vaccines have been developed and one has been approved that can safeguard you from this infection.
