In a wild tale from Down Under, Aussie farmer Colin Deveraux turned into a real-life crocodile wrangler.
The daring cattle producer, in his sixties, was on a fence-fixing mission near the Finniss River in Northern Territory, Australia, when he faced off with a feisty 3.2 m saltwater crocodile.
What happened
- While working on some fencing, Colin took a break by a lake, only to get a surprise visit from a 3.2 m saltwater crocodile.
- After stopping at a billabong (lake) during his travels to build fencing near the Finniss River, he noticed fish in the water.
- As he stepped away, a crocodile suddenly clamped onto his right foot, pulling him into the water and started a tug-of-war, as per ABC.
- The farmer tried kicking the croc away but had to resort to a drastic move - he bit the crocodile's eyelid.
"The water had receded and it was down to this dirty water in the middle. I took two steps and the dirty b***ard [the crocodile] latched onto my right foot."
- Colin told ABC
- After the crocodile attack, he used a towel and rope for first aid to stop the bleeding in his leg.
- His brother then drove him to the Royal Darwin Hospital, about 130 km away.
- After the attack, he spent a month in the hospital and considers himself fortunate to have survived the encounter.
Reflecting on the life-changing incident, he emphasises the need to be more cautious and aware.
"It all happened in about eight seconds I reckon," he told ABC.
The crocodile that attacked him has been "removed", although crocodiles are legally protected in the Northern Territory.
