Ahmedabad cops force Delhi man to pay Rs 20k during World Cup final for sealed vodka bottle in car

An individual who travelled to Ahmedabad to watch the final match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 between India and Australia found himself in a rather unconventional troublesome situation.

In a GSTV video clip that went viral online after the World Cup final, the individual claimed the Ahmedabad Police extorted Rs 20,000 through UPI payment after he was travelling to the dry state with a 'bottle of vodka.'

What happened?

• According to a DeshGujrat report, the incident took place on the highway, just after the Chiloda expressway, near Gandhinagar (state capital, on the northern outskirts of Ahmedabad).
• The individual in the video said, that at least 5-6 police personnel stopped his car at a checkpoint and asked if they were carrying any alcohol, given the ban of alcohol in the state.
• The man, along with his driver were travelling by road to see the match, said to the police that they had "a sealed bottle of Absolut Vodka" with them.
• The police personnel then allegedly took them out of the car, "harassed" them and drove off putting them in a police vehicle on the pretext of taking them to the Police Station.
• However, 5-6 of them were quick to quote Rs 2 lakh as a bribe for letting them go, which in no time came down to Rs 1.5 lakh, claimed the victim.
• The deal was finally settled for Rs 20,000 through UPI payment.

In the GSTV video clip, the individual said he showed the transaction details. However the same has not become public yet.

Police pledges action

• Following the 'gone-viral' of this incident through a local television channel's interview with the cricket fan, an inquiry has been initiated, and the Ahmedabad city police have pledged to take strict action against the responsible party.

• The Ahmedabad Police, on November 20, took to X to inform an inquiry to the Assistant Commissioner of Police of Division-C has been ordered.

The crowd attending the World Cup Final already faced the heat for its lack of enthusiasm during the final match, which resulted in India's defeat.

This incident should be a major embarrassment for the city police, especially considering that the Government of India is contemplating proposing Ahmedabad as the host city for the 2036 Olympic Games.
