By now you might come across the story of the auto-rickshaw driver who won the Rs 25 crore Onam bumper lottery in Kerala on September 18. This might have tempted several individuals out there to try their luck. But how? Let’s find out.

Lottery system in Kerala: Kerala State Lotteries started in 1967 by the government of Kerala. All private lotteries were banned during that time. It is the first of its kind in India.

PK Kunju Sahib, the state finance minister at that time initiated this scheme to ensure enough non-tax revenue for the state through the sale of lotteries. The aim was also to provide a stable income source to the weaker section of the society.

The first lottery ticket was released on November 1, 1967, for Re 1. The prize money was Rs 50,000. 

The lottery system was earlier under the Department of Finances. It was later transferred to the state’s Taxes Department. There are 14 district and 21 sub-lottery offices.

The functioning of the Kerala lottery system: The Kerala State Lotteries draws seven weekly lotteries a week.

There is a monthly draw every month. Plus there are 6 bumper lotteries in a year.

Weekly draws:

  • Monday: Win Win
  • Tuesday: Sthree Sakthi
  • Wednesday: Akshaya
  • Thursday: Karunya Plus
  • Friday: Nirmal
  • Saturday: Karunya
  • Sunday: Fifty-Fifty

The first prize of these lotteries vary start from Rs 75,00,000 to Rs 1,00,00,000.

The 6 bumper lotteries offer prizes in crores. The auto driver won one of these bumper lotteries with 25 crore as the prize.

The lottery department declares the results on the official site on the same day at 3 pm. The winners usually get the prize money within 30 days of the draw date after verifications and documentation.
