Covid is not over, says epidemiologist as coronavirus deaths rise in UK

Vaccination against Covid plays a crucial role in preventing severe complications of the virus

Twitter users woke up to a #Covidisnotover trend on Thursday (September 1). And the rising Covid numbers and virus-related deaths in England tell the same thing.

A recent data highlights the impact of Covid on kids and how it is responsible for more deaths than ever.

Dr Eric Feigl Ding, an epidemiologist and health economist and Chief of Covid Task Force at the New England Complex Systems Institute, US, shared a thread on Twitter focusing on the huge number of Covid-related deaths among children in England in the past few months.

He has urged people not to believe that Covid is over and asked people not to be a “Covid minimizer”.

The key points of the data he shared:

1. Dr Ding said that in England, the number of kids that have died due to Covid in the first 8 months of 2022 is more than the number of kids that have died during the first eight months of 2020 and 2021 combined.

2. Due to the alarming numbers, he has stressed that kids are not practically immune. They are also vulnerable to the virus. This calls for compulsory vaccination for kids as well.

3. Dr Ding has also focused on the importance of getting the BA5 variant booster against Covid. He has explained that there exists a booster against Omicron in the UK but it is the BA1 booster, not BA5.

“#BA5 and BA4 are very different variants from the old BA1/BA2 variants. Thus, a #BA5 booster likely is far superior—get it.”

“New #BA5 and #BA4-targeting coronavirus booster shots has now gotten EUA from the Food and Drug Administration for age 12+. CDC advisors will vote tomorrow. Rollout imminent within days,” he wrote.

What is the current Covid situation in India?

In the last 24 hours, India has reported 7,964 Covid cases. The country's daily positivity rate remains at 2.98%. There are currently 62,748 active Covid cases in India.

The country is currently running the largest vaccination drive. A total of 12,90,443 doses were given yesterday and 212.52 crore total vaccine doses have been given till date.
