Among the victims were five children and random passersby. The upset crowd, fearing rabies, resorted to using stones to stop the dog's rampage. Now, the bitten individuals and their families are anxiously awaiting test results to determine if the dog carried the rabies virus.
The Greater Chennai Corporation has sent the dead dog to the Madras Veterinary College for postmortem. "The dog could be rabies-infected as it has shown unprovoked aggression. We will get the test report in two days," said GCC veterinary officer Dr. Kamal Hussain to TOI.

Residents in North Chennai criticised the corporation for not taking stray dogs seriously and pointed fingers at pet owners who casually abandon their dogs near the Veterinary College, contributing to the surge in the stray population.
The city's authorities are bombarded with a huge 60-100 dog-related complaints every day.
In 2022, the civic body captured approximately 16,000 dogs across the city, sterilized them, and then released them back into their neighborhoods as per regulations.
