If you have a flight scheduled from Bengaluru today, it's crucial to be well-prepared. The ongoing Karnataka bandh, sparked by a dispute over Cauvery river water, has resulted in Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru having to cancel 22 incoming and 22 outbound flights.

  • While airport taxi services might be disrupted during the bandh, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) will maintain its regular Namma Metro services without interruption.
  • To make sure you don't miss your flight, it's a good idea to arrive at the airport at least three hours before your scheduled departure.

What to keep in mind if you have a flight to catch today

Vistara Airlines, IndiGo, SpiceJet, and Akasa Air are advising travellers to get to the Bengaluru airport earlier than usual because there might be problems with private transportation that could cause delays.

So, have ample extra time in hand to avoid any issues.

First things first,

  • Check your flight status before leaving for the airport, in case the flight is delayed or cancelled.
  • If you can take the Metro, take it instead of opting for a taxi.
  • Arrive at the airport at least three hours before your flight, if it's a domestic flight, and time yourself accordingly in case you've got an international flight.
  • Stay informed with local news and official airport updates for any last-minute changes.
  • Pack light to make security checks and boarding simpler.

Why the Bengaluru bandh

  • Pro-Kannada groups protested across Karnataka on September 29 about the Cauvery water-sharing issue with Tamil Nadu.
  • Transport unions in Bengaluru supported a bandh on September 26.
  • On Friday, 44 flights were cancelled at Bengaluru International Airport.

Pro-Kannada and farmer groups are leading a day-long statewide shutdown on September 29; i.e, today. A big protest march from Town Hall to Freedom Park in the city is currently underway, with people from various backgrounds expected to join in.

Section 144 has been enforced in Bengaluru city until 12 midnight September 30 due to the presence of more than 2,000 pro-Kannada groups protesting the release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu.
