Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his state visit, will join US President Joe Biden for a press conference on Thursday (June 22), where they will deliver remarks and engage with journalists.

The highly anticipated event, described as a "big deal" by a senior White House official, marks a departure from Modi's usual avoidance of media questioning, reported Reuters.

Why is it a big deal?

In a significant departure from his past practices, PM Modi will address questions from the media, a move seldom witnessed during his nine-year tenure as India's leader.

While he participated in a press conference in May 2019, he refrained from taking questions, making this upcoming press conference a rare opportunity for reporters to engage directly with him.

White House emphasizes importance of Modi's participation

White House national security spokesperson John Kirby expressed gratitude for Prime Minister Modi's participation in the press event, highlighting its significance, reported Reuters.

The White House views this press conference as a notable moment in the bilateral relationship between India and the United States.

Limited questions

The press conference format will involve one question from the US press and another from an Indian journalist, ensuring a balanced representation of perspectives.

Similar to previous White House press conferences with world leaders, the number of questions will be limited, with reporters preselected by US officials.

Human rights and other topics expected

Amidst mounting pressure from fellow Democrats, President Biden may address human rights concerns with Modi during the press conference.

The issue of democratic backsliding in India under Modi's Hindu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) could be one of the topics explored during the session, Reuters reported.

Modi's first state visit to the US

While PM Modi has previously visited the United States on five occasions since assuming office in 2014, this trip holds a special significance as it marks his first full-fledged state visit.

PM Modi will become the only Indian Prime Minister to address a joint session of the US Congress twice. The Prime Minister had earlier addressed the US Congress in 2016.
