King Charles III kicks off Carolean era in Britain. What were Charles I and II like?

With the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, King Charles III has ascended the throne of Britain. Yet the name of his choosing carries a history that is representative of some of England's worst periods.

The new King Charles III had four name sto choose from. He was named Charles Philip Arthur George.

Though there had been speculation that the new king would not adopt Charles III as his regnal name due to the colourful history associated with it, the new monarch went ahead and did so anyway.

It is suggested that he may have done so out of reverence for his late mother, who upon ascending the throne herself, also chose to keep her own name for her reign, making her the second Elizabeth to sit on the throne of England.

That being said, the fact still remains that historically, Britain’s time with a ‘Charles’ on the throne has not been the finest of its moments (then again, Britain hasn’t had too many fine moments throughout history to begin with).

Here’s a look at the legacy that prior Charleses have left for the new King of England...

Safe to say, King Charles III has got his work cut out for him, should he even dream to follow in the regal (and quadruped) footsteps of his predecessing namesakes.
