Pakistan called its diplomat back over sexual misconduct, but Spain wants answers

After the probe was over, the Pakistan Foreign Office recalled Mirza Salman Baig to Islamabad.

Sexual harassment by a senior Pakistani diplomat in Barcelona has put pressure on the country's mission in Spain. An internal inquiry is going on in the matter which may lead to further revelations.

A local Pakistan consulate staffer in Barcelona had alleged that the Consul General of Pakistan in Spain at the time, Mirza Salman Baig, sexually harassed her at the workplace for more than three months, reported ANI.

The complaint: The victim had filed a criminal case in a local court saying that Baig used to harass her by sending lewd messages. She accused that she was also subjected to a sexual assault attempt by Baig in a hotel in Barcelona, Al Arabiya reported.

The victim had lodged a complaint with Pakistan Ambassador Shujat Rathore in Madrid, who later referred the matter to the Foreign Office in Islamabad for further investigation.

What action did Pakistan take? Pakistan's Foreign Ministry sent a two-member team to Barcelona and Madrid to probe the case. And after the probe was over, the Foreign Office removed the officer from his position and recalled him to Islamabad.

Spain seeks a response: Spain has sought a response from the Pakistani mission in the country saying that it cannot dodge the responsibility for providing a safe work environment for the workers.
