Protest erupted at Punjab's Lovely Professional University (LPU) after a first-year student died by suicide.

The student, who was from Kerala and was studying B Design at the university, ended his life on Tuesday, police said.

After the news of suicide came out, students of the university held a huge protest on the campus. Policemen have been deployed outside the university campus in Phagwara.

Police's statement: Police said that prima facie its appears that the student was facing some personal issues as was suggested by a suicide note left by him, a police official in Phagwara said. Police said the student's parents have been informed and an investigation is underway, reported PTI.

"We received info at around 5.30 pm on September 20 that a first-year student of B Design at Lovely Professional University died by suicide. We reached the spot & recovered a suicide note which cited personal reasons; further investigation underway," Kapurthala Police said.

University statement: Lovely Professional University released a statement saying that the initial investigation and all contents of the suicide note point towards personal issues of the deceased. "The initial investigation by the police, and the content of the suicide note point towards personal issues of the deceased. The university is providing full support to the authorities for further investigation," the university said.

"The University mourns the loss of the student and expresses its condolences to the bereaved family," LPU said in a statement posted on its Twitter handle.

Why are the students protesting? According to some of the students protesting, this is the second death by suicide at the Lovely Professional University in last 10 days

The protesting students, who allege that the previous suicide was covered up by the authorities, demand to know the reason behind both cases. They claim the previous incident was "resolved behind closed doors", reported NDTV.

A Kapurthala district administration official has appealed to students not to believe in any rumours, reported PTI.
