Train derailment in The Netherlands kills at least 1, 30 more injured

A passenger train carrying some 50 people derailed in the western Netherlands in the wee hours of April 4. At least one person has been killed and 30 have been injured. Reports say the passenger train crashed into a construction crane and ploughed into a nearby field.

What we know so far

  • The double-decker train was travelling from Leiden City to The Hague and derailed in Voorschoten village. 
  • The incident took place around 3.25 am local time (6.55 am IST) on April 4. 
We heard a bang first and then later, a much more intense one. Then we heard people screaming. It was not good.

  • A freight train has also been reportedly damaged in the incident. 
  • While some injured were treated on the scene, others were rushed to a hospital. 
  • Some are reportedly seriously injured in the incident.  

  • Over 20 ambulances were rushed to the scene as passengers tried to scramble to safety in the dark. 
  • The rail line between Leiden City and The Hague has been closed for the day.
  • An investigation is underway into the incident, but so far the cause of the crash and derailment remains unknown. 

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte tweeted about the incident:

The rail systems in The Netherlands are generally said to be very safe. However, there have been a few train derailment incidents coming out of other parts of Europe, notably Greece. Just last month a train derailment in Greece killed at least 26 people, following which the Transport Minister resigned.
