A Hindu tailor in Rajasthan's Udaipur was brutally murdered in broad daylight on Wednesday for his social media posts supporting suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma. The accused Riyaz Akhtari and Ghaus Mohammad tried to behead 40-year-old Kanhaiyya Lal Sahu at his shop, but could only slit his throat. Sahu died on the spot.

The story so far:

Sahu owned a tailor shop in the Dhan Mandi area of Udaipur. He had gotten into trouble earlier for his social media posts supporting Nupur Sharma and her remarks against Prophet Mohammad. Sahu was even arrested in the matter but was released on bail just days before his murder.

The tailor had also alleged a threat to his life and had sought police protection. He had been receiving death threats for his inflammatory social media posts.

And on Tuesday, June 28, the two accused came to his shop and killed him while he was taking their measurements.

A timeline of events:

Reports say that the accused have terror links, likely to Pakistan-based Dawat-i-Islami. However, so far, it looks like a lone-wolf act.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has ordered an NIA probe in the matter. Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has asked people not to watch or circulate the video of the murder.

He said that strict action will be ensured. However, rival BJP leaders like Vasundhara Raje hit out at the Gehlot government for having enabled such crimes through their appeasement policies.
