Blade Runner 2033 Labyrinth is Annapurna Interactive’s first in-house video game project

Annapurna Interactive has made a massive announcement in the gaming world with the development of their first in-house studio game called Blade Runner 2033: Labyrinth, revealed during the Annapurna Interactive Showcase 2023.

Blade Runner 2033: Labyrinth is a game based on Ridley Scott’s iconic science fiction film and is set between the events of the original movie and Denis Villeneuve’s Academy Award-winning sequel, Blade Runner 2049 (2017). This provides players with an opportunity to explore what Harrison Ford’s Deckard, the main character in the original film, was up to before his encounter with Ryan Gosling's Officer K in an abandoned casino.

The game's trailer offers a glimpse into the mysterious "land of the dead" as seen through the eyes of a Blade Runner, whose identity remains unknown. While not much is revealed, the footage suggests the presence of early memory-crafting technology similar to that seen in Blade Runner 2049.

Leading the development of Blade Runner 2033: Labyrinth is Chelsea Hash, known for her work on acclaimed titles such as Solar Ash and What Remains of Edith Finch. Hash's involvement in Radiohead's interactive exploration game, Kid A Mnesia Exhibition, further highlights her talent and experience.

Annapurna Interactive emphasizes that this game is canon and takes place only one year after the original film's events, placing it within the broader narrative of the Blade Runner universe. The developers aim to delve into significant events alluded to in the sequel, offering players a chance to further immerse themselves in this rich and dystopian world.

Although specific details about the game are limited, the title provides some intriguing hints about the story. The game will explore the time between the original Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049, focusing on a Blade Runner's journey in a world where replicants no longer exist. This premise raises questions about the protagonist's purpose and the challenges they will face in this post-replicant era.

The game's debut trailer showcases a character, likely a former Blade Runner from the LAPD, utilizing a "memory orb" device reminiscent of the one used by Dr. Ana Stelline in 2049 to create artificial memories for replicants.

As the character navigates through different recreated locations, the visuals blend together with digital artifacting effects, creating a sense of mystery and intrigue. The reference to "Project Pyramid" in the title card suggests a potential connection to the iconic Tyrell Corporation headquarters.

Although no official release date has been announced, Blade Runner 2033 is confirmed for release on PC and major consoles. It marks Annapurna Interactive's first venture into in-house game development, following their success as a publisher for notable games like Stray, Outer Wilds, and Donut County
With Annapurna's proven track record for delivering unique and quality experiences, fans eagerly anticipate their foray into game development and the potential it holds.

As the gaming community awaits further updates, the prospect of exploring the Blade Runner universe through Labyrinth is undeniably exciting. Annapurna Interactive's dedication to delivering memorable and artistic experiences raises expectations for this highly anticipated game, leaving fans eager to uncover the mysteries of the "land of the dead" and witness the evolution of the beloved Blade Runner narrative.
