Apple iPhone XI to Samsung Galaxy Flex: Smartphones to look out for in 2019

As we turn the page on 2018 – a year that saw the smartphone industry scale new heights in terms of innovation – it is the perfect time to look ahead at what we can expect from the industry in the coming year.

With big names such as Samsung celebrating their 10th year in the business, and the likes of Apple and Huawei looking to build on their good work from the year gone by, 2019 is sure to be an important year for the industry which is also planning to transition to the newer 5G standards in the coming months.

Let’s take a look at the hotly anticipated devices that could be announced in the coming year.

Samsung Galaxy Flex

After a wait of over a decade, smartphones may well be ready to plunge headfirst into a new and exciting future. One where they will be more than just slabs of glass and metal – maybe even more than smartphones as we know them today.

And the device that guides them into this future may likely be Samsung’s upcoming foldable phone, the Galaxy Flex.

Though we don’t know much about the device yet, from the information we have, it’s clear that the device will come with a form factor of a current day smartphone but will open up to turn into a full-fledged tablet.

Samsung has revealed that the phone will come with two displays.

The main 7.3-inch foldable panel boasting of a resolution of 1536x2152  – and slightly unusual aspect ratio of 4:2:3 – will be fitted inside, while a second 4.58-inch 840x1960 resolution display will be found outside when the phone is folded to assume the form of a conventional smartphone.

Nokia 9

This is another phone that is highly anticipated because of the technology that it’s expected to bring with it.

At a time when the market is still transitioning towards three – even four – camera lens setups, Nokia has decided that it’s time to bring to the table a flagship device with as many as five cameras at the back.

Rumoured to be made official at the end of next month, the Nokia 9 will also bring with it the PureView display technology apart from the penta-camera setup.

Reports also suggest that the Nokia 9 will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset paired with up to 8GB of RAM. Keeping the lights on will be a big 4,150mAh battery.

Huawei P30 Pro

China’s biggest smartphone maker, Huawei, had a pretty impressive 2018. The smartphone maker churned out some really impressive phones such as the P20 Pro this year.

Now in 2019, we expect it to follow up and bring to the market another innovative phone in the P30.

Leaked renders of the device show it could come with four rear cameras including a 10x optical zoom as well as a water drop notch in the front.

In terms of the core specs, the Huawei P30 Pro is expected to run the company’s first 7nm SoC: Kirin 980 paired with up to 8GB RAM.

Though there hasn't been any official announcement yet, we expect the phone to be launched at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in 2019 and make its way to India in the coming months.

iPhone XI

For the longest of time Cupertino-based tech giant, Apple had become synonymous with innovation. However, in the last couple of years, it lost the plot a little and was seen coming out with boring devices that brought with them very little in terms of innovation.

Even the much touted, iPhone X, did not really prove to be as radical as many fanboys expected it to be. But that could finally be about to change.

Latest renders doing rounds on the web suggest that 2019’s iPhone could be truly something special as it would bring with it an all-screen design with no notches or bezels on the front.

Further, the new iPhone could be thinner than ever and is rumoured to be less than 6mm in thickness.

At the back, the current dual camera setup is also expected to make way for a much improved three camera solution to help the phone take on the likes of Samsung and Huawei.
