Why ISRO launching 20 satellites into space is a proud day for India

India’s premier space agency, ISRO’s (Indian Space Research Organisation) PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) C-34 launched 20 satellites into space on June 22, further consolidating India’s place as a lead player in the area of space exploration. The satellites which were launched from Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh were lauded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The PM congratulated ISRO via Twitter.

“Over the years we developed expertise & capability to help other nations in their space initiatives. This is the skill of our scientists,” posted Modi. The 20 satellites weighed around 1,288kg.

Here is everything that you need to know about the historic launch:

  1. PSLV C-34 to put 20 satellites into the same orbit. This will be the highest number of satellites put into same orbit by a PSLV.
  2. PSLV C-34 will rank ISRO third in putting the most satellites into orbit simultaneously. Russia launched 33 satellites in 2014 while 29 satellites while launched by NASA in 2013.
  3. The cost of the entire mission is about ten times less than those undertaken by other space agencies.
  4. The payload consists of one Cartosat-2 satellite for earth observation, two satellites developed by Indian universities, 13 satellites from US, and four satellites from Canada, Germany and Indonesia.
  5. Images sent by Cartosat will be used urban, rural, coastal land use, water distribution and for other such applications.
  6. 84 satellites have been launched by PSLV from 1994-2015.
  7. 34 India satellites are currently in operation in different spheres.
  8. Antrix Corp is the commercial arm of ISRO that launches foreign satellites into space. Since 1999, 57 foreign satellites have been launched and 21 countries have used ISRO’s services.
  9. $101 million have been earned via Antrix Corp so far.
