Legacy Blue Ticks on Twitter, Elon Musk has a new pay-up-or-lose-it deadline for you... April 20

First, it was April 1 (guess, we were all fooled!), and now it is April 20, the day legacy blue ticks on Twitter will be removed. Twitter users will now have to pay the company $8 and/or $11 per month to get the once-coveted blue verified checks.

For organisations, the fee starts at $1,000 per month and they have to pay an additional fee to have their associates verified and linked to the organisation.

Context

  • On April 1, most legacy verified Twitter users woke up to find their blue ticks intact and asked whether the deadline was a joke. Turns out it was not, but it looked like Twitter found out that removing blue ticks is easier said than done.
  • Twitter did one thing though -- it made it impossible to see whether a verified handle was legacy blue verified or Twitter Blue subscribed, by changing the description.

Now what?

  • All the legacy verified accounts on Twitter will lose their blue ticks if they do not subscribe to Twitter Blue by April 20.
  • This includes organisations. Already, media outlets such as the New York Times have made it clear that they will not be subscribing to Twitter Blue.
  • Musk responded by removing the NYT Twitter handle's blue check mark.
  • In the latest, American non-profit media organisation NPR announced that they are quitting Twitter after the social network labelled them "state-affiliated media".

  • PBS joined NPR in its Twitter exit as well. So far, these are the first major news organisations to have quit Twitter.
  • Legacy blue ticks are being removed gradually from Twitter. Among celebrities, Doja Cat lost her blue tick. And when a fan told her that "it's over" for her, the American singer replied saying, "Only fans have blue ticks."
  • Twitter Verified has also unfollowed all accounts on Twitter.
  • Elon Musk has been vocal about Twitter's legacy verification process before taking over the company. He's of the opinion that it created a "lords vs peasants" system.

On the other hand, reports revealed that Twitter is no longer a company. It has now been merged with Elon Musk's futuristic company X Corp.
