Bezel-less display and more: All we know about Xiaomi Redmi Note 5

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi, known for its light-on-the-pocket but heavy-on-specs phones has made quite a name for itself in the country. Of late, the company has enjoyed great success in the Indian market, as it recently became the joint leader of the smartphone market.

The smartphone maker's success has largely been built on the sales of blockbuster devices like the Redmi Note 4, which till date remains one of the best-selling smartphones in the country. However, the phone now is a year old and as such its charm is slightly waning. Increased competition in the price segment has seen the Note 4 increasingly looking like an outdated device that is finding it hard to compete with newer handsets such as the Honor 9 Lite.

But looks like Xiaomi has already formulated plans to remedy the situation by bringing to the market a new budget segment warrior, one that promises to carry forward the Note lineup's legacy.

The Redmi Note 5

Leaks and rumours for a while have pointed towards a new Redmi Note phone for 2018. The new device is expected to look and feel more in line with today's times and will sport a display that communicates the same to the buyers.

The Redmi Note 5 is a phone that is being eagerly awaited by Xiaomi's millions of fans across the globe and is expected to bring with it, not just above par specs, but also an 18:9 bezel-less display all at an affordable price.

However, there are reports that at the time of its launch, the device may not be announced under the Note lineup, and will be called the Redmi 5 Plus. But this will do little to quell enthusiasm for a phone that according to the latest renders will sport an 18:9 5.99-inch Full HD+ display. There will be 4GB of RAM and 64GB storage on board.

Both the variants are reported to be powered by a 2.0GHz Snapdragon 636 SoC and are expected to sport dual cameras consisting of one 16-megapixel sensor and another 5-megapixel sensor (for portrait selfies). The device will come running Android Nougat-based MIUI 9 and will be powered by a 4,100mAh battery that will support fast charging.

The phone is expected to be priced at 1,499 yuan (around $237 or Rs 15,000) and could be made available in three colour options, including gray, black and blue.

However, this goes against previous reports which stated that the device will be available in two variants with either 3GB or 4GB of RAM depending on the storage model.

Previous reports also claimed that both the variants will be powered by a 2.0GHz Snapdragon 625 octa-core CPU and are expected to sport a 12MP 1.25μm rear Camera with f/2.2 aperture, phase detection autofocus and dual-LED (dual tone) flash along with a 4000mAh battery pack.

There should be more clarity on this soon as Xiaomi is expected to unveil the Redmi Note 5 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona later this month.

But regardless of the number of variants, the move to the all-new 18:9 FullHD+ display, coupled with improved specs is sure to bring Xiaomi back into the game and blow out of the water the new pretenders for its budget king throne.
