Paying your bills happily can improve your finances. Here's how

Paying your bills happily, having gratitude for your resources, and not resenting your financial situations can make a big difference in improving your finances.

I generally read a lot of non-fiction books, primarily on money mindset, entrepreneurship, and psychology. The one lesson I find present in almost every non-fiction book about living an amazing life is this: Have Gratitude in your life to create the most amazing possibilities.

Gratitude and life: Why? Having gratitude shifts your focus on the good that you have right now and makes you focus on the existing abundance that is present, instead of focusing on what you lack. Counting your blessings for the people that surround you and the situations you are blessed with, makes you feel fulfilled and raises your vibrations. Being grateful for what you have, also makes you a positive person, raises your self-esteem and helps you advance well in your career.

Gratitude and money: When it comes to money, non-fiction books also recommend being grateful for the cash and the bank balance you have, irrespective of how much you have. Research has found that people who are grateful are more focused and productive. And people generally prefer to work with those who are grateful than those who are indifferent.

Why is gratitude so powerful? Being grateful means acknowledging that you already have enough of what you need, and puts you out of ''the state of neediness''. When you are out of the 'needy state' and 'feel abundant', you operate from a detached state of mind and attract more abundance.

Don't resent financial obligations: Another lesson that stands out in non-fiction books on money is this: We should never fear or resent our financial obligations. This is because when we fear, resent or even criticize our financial obligations and bills, it becomes a burden. And usually, when you look at something as a burden, it is very difficult to think of better prosperous thoughts about it or to do something to get out of it. Burdensome bills only bring in panic and worry, and when you aren't able to pay them, it makes you resent them. This in turn makes you feel out of control and helpless.

So how do you shift your mindset? Pay your bills happily. Be it your mobile bill or your rent expense or even your car EMI, bills are evidence that you are enjoying or have enjoyed a privilege. You can always feel grateful for having enjoyed the privilege of having connected with your family or professional network whenever you needed to at the punch of a button, or you can feel grateful that you can travel with your family with ease in your car. Since you enjoy your privilege, you can be really happy that having enjoyed this privilege, you might as well pay for it with money because what you received was probably much more valuable.

So the next time you have to pay your bills, make it a memorable and enjoyable moment.

  • Create a cozy space by lighting a candle or an incense stick,
  • Sit with a bowl of your favorite cookies (or any food that you enjoy)
  • Look at your invoices,
  • Take a moment to actively appreciate the goods or services that were provided to you and
  • Appreciate your ability to pay the required money.
