Koffee With Karan Season 8: The filmmaker is more vulnerable, open, and chaotic than ever

This year's "Koffee with Karan" marks the eighth season of the show. The show is one of the most iconic and has lasted for more than a decade, with the first episode airing in 2004. I mean, who doesn't enjoy listening to their favourite stars sitting on a couch and gossiping about their love lives, work, and everything else?

However, one common complaint we've had for the past few seasons is that 'the show isn't candid anymore,' and everything the celebrities were saying or commenting on looked less natural. But this year's season felt different. It was probably Karan's way of hosting or awe of the first season's first show or the adorable couple Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh, you can choose. But we have talked a lot about Ranveer and Deepika enough, let's talk about the host.

A post shared by Karan Johar (@karanjohar)

The first thing that we loved about him this year was "his candidness" (which was missing in the previous shows).

Karan Johar tries to host the show with absolute honesty, but often at times, the questions came off as scripted in the previous seasons. However, this year, Karan was more candid, and he was more open to sharing his thoughts and stories.

For instance, remember when he spoke about his mental health and said, "oh shit, my mom will be watching this." The reaction clearly showed us the classic scene of an Indian household where the mom is always worried about her son or even daughter, no matter how old he grows!

Mental health

Karan Johar had Ranveer and Deepika as his first couple, and as he should, he brings up the question about Mental health. Deepika indeed talks about her depression and anxiety, but we loved it when Karan also chimed in the conversation and shared his part of the story.

Deepika, who has been one of the few mental health advocates in Bollywood, along with Karan Johar, who has also opened up about his panic attacks and seeking professional help, seeks to normalize the discussion of mental health rather than stigmatize it.

3. How it is okay to envy your friends

Remember "3 Idiots" and the iconic memeable dialogue where Raju Rastogi says, "dost fail ho jaye to dukh hota hai, lekin best friend first aa jae toh aur dukh hota hai" (It hurts when your friend fails, but it hurts like hell when your best friend tops the class).

Now cut to the scene when Karan talks about how he admires Deepika and Ranveer's wedding video but the video also makes him feel when he will get a partner.

Often at times, envy among friends is hidden and considered bad, but the scene from the show makes us realize that it is okay to feel, we are only human!

More vulnerable and open

We have seen Karan squeezing out the juiciest gossip from celebs, but as a host, this season Karan shines, as we saw him more vulnerable (while he was talking about his mental health), more realistic (talking about how he feels about trolls), and chaotic (how he looks back and regrets his outfit choices) and above all he got more personal by sharing his side of the story and how he felt about various things.

His cute failed attempt at being a GenZer

As a Gen Z myself, I would like to give Karan a solid 8 out of 10 for trying out our Gen Z lingo. Cannot trace it back? Remember when he gives his starting monologue and how he used all the terms like "giving" and "serving," which worked (well sort of).
