Veteran actor Waheeda Rehman to be honoured with Dadasaheb Phalke Award 2023

Veteran Indian actor Waheeda Rehman, who is often considered one of the most elegant actors in the industry, is being conferred with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award this year. The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is India's highest honour in cinema.

On September 26, 2023, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur announced via a post on X that veteran actor Waheeda Rehman will receive the Dadasaheb Phalke Award this year. 

The Dadasaheb Phalke award is the highest recognition in Indian cinema, and Rehman’s works in the industry over more than seven decades makes her a well-deserved recipient for the honour.

In his post on X, Anurag Thakur praised Rehman’s acting skills, experience and immense contribution to Indian cinema.

Conincidentally, today also marks the birth anniversary of another late Indian actor Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehmaan. Both the actors  shared the screen in several movies like Guide, Prem Pujari, Kala Bazar. 

Last year, Asha Parekh was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, recognising her outstanding lifelong dedication to Indian cinema.

The Dadasaheb Phalke award only adds to the long list of accolades that Waheeda Rehman has already received over her long career in the industry. Some of them include:

• Padma Shri in 1972
• Filmfare Award for Best Actress - Guide (1967) 
• Filmfare Award for Best Actress - Neel Kamal (1969) 

• National Film Award for Best Actress - Reshma Aur Shera (1972)
• She received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995
