On Tuesday, in Hyderabad, the ICC World Cup 2023 match between Pakistan and Sri Lanka earned itself a milestone seat in World Cup history, witnessing the most number of centuries in a World Cup game.
What
Yesterday’s World Cup clash between Pakistan and Sri Lanka got a place for itself in the World Cup history after numerous records were broken during both the innings of the match.
- On the sixth day of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, Pakistan successfully chased down the target of 345 runs by Sri Lanka, in just 48.2 overs.
- The credit for this chase goes to Muhammad Rizwan scoring an unbeaten 131 and Abdullah Shafique adding 113. Their joint effort recorded the highest run-chase ever done by the Pakistan cricket team.
These two batters guided their country to a much-needed victory before their highly-anticipated match between India and Pakistan. Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka by six wickets and only ten balls to spare.
Records broken
- This was the highest run chase ever recorded in a World Cup match, beating Ireland, who previously held the record when they chased 328 runs to beat England at the 2011 World Cup.
- The match set a new record with the highest number of centuries scored in a single World Cup match.
- Kusal Mendis, Sadeera Samarawickrama from Sri Lanka, Abdullah Shafique and Muhammad Rizwan each scored centuries.
- This was only the third time in ODI internationals with four centuries in a single game:
- Pakistan vs Australia in 1998, and
- India vs Australia in 2013.
