The ICC World Cup 2023 is approaching its crucial stages, and the Indian cricket team appears set to secure a spot in the semi-finals, with the upcoming week critical for other teams vying for a top-four finish.

What

  • The ICC ODI World Cup 2023 is heating up as it approaches the conclusion of the group stage, with teams fiercely competing for a place in the top four to secure a spot in the semi-finals.
  • Currently, all ten teams have completed six matches in the round-robin group stage.
  • With three matches remaining, no team has guaranteed advancement or elimination from the tournament.

India

On track to become the first team to reach the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 semi-finals, India require just one more victory after an impressive 100-run win over England.

Criteria for other teams to reach the semis

South Africa

  • Next in line to secure their spot in the tournament, South Africa, who have won five out of their last six matches, must rely on favourable results.
  • Despite trailing India in points, South Africa currently lead with the best net run rate.
  • South Africa along with the whole cricket world was left surprised after a defeat against the Netherlands in their third match but quickly bounced back with three straight wins, which included a thrilling pursuit of 271 against Pakistan.

New Zealand

  • The Blackcaps, initially undefeated in four matches, now aim to revive their form with two wins in their next three games to secure a top-four spot.
  • Securing three straight wins would be ideal for the Blackcaps, even though they face formidable opponents in the later stages of their group-stage campaign.
  • Securing two victories would bring their total to 12 points, potentially securing them a spot in the semifinals, thanks to their strong net run rate.

Australia

  • The reigning champions rebounded from two losses, embarking on a four-game winning streak. These victories also enhanced Australia's Net Run Rate.
  • For Australia to secure their third consecutive semi final berth, they must win their remaining three matches. Alternatively, two wins and favourable results in other fixtures could secure them a spot in the top four.
  • A victory against England would extinguish the Ashes rivals' title defence hopes. However, even if they fall to England, progress remains possible with subsequent wins over Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

Afghanistan

  • Afghanistan's impressive 2023 World Cup journey continued with a remarkable seven-wicket triumph against Sri Lanka at Pune on Monday, October 30.
  • Currently, Afghanistan is trailing New Zealand and Australia by just two points in the third and fourth positions on the table.
  • With all teams having three matches left, led by Hasmatullah Shahidi, they hold a strong opportunity to secure a spot in the knockout stage.

Sri Lanka

  • Sri Lanka faced numerous challenges in the tournament, including player injuries.
  • They're not entirely out of the race for a top-four finish. To qualify, they must win their last three matches, similar to Pakistan and Netherlands, while relying on favourable outcomes in other games.

Pakistan

  • Babar Azam-led Pakistan have been under severe criticism for their below-par performance in this World Cup and are a step away from elimination.
  • They're now in do-or-die territory, needing three consecutive wins and favourable results to secure a spot in the semifinals.
  • Pakistan's hope hinges on Australia's losses in their upcoming matches.

Netherland

  • The  Netherland cricket team has certainly made a name for themselves in this tournament after defeating two significantly strong teams - South Africa and Bangladesh.
  • Netherlands will have to win their remaining three matches and should they secure a victory over India, it could be regarded as the tournament's most remarkable upset, potentially propelling them into contention for a top-four spot.

Bangladesh

  • Bangladesh have continued their traditional bad form in the World Cup and are on the verge of elimination.
  • They would require winning all three of their remaining matches and hope for some extraordinary results elsewhere before even thinking about the semis.

England

  • England's performance in the ICC Cricket World Cup in India is their poorest till date, with an unprecedented five match losses.
  • Similar to Bangladesh, they too rely on unexpected outcomes in other games and win their three matches to secure a spot in the semifinals.

The first semifinal is scheduled for November 15 at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium, and the subsequent semifinal will be held on November 16 at Kolkata's Eden Gardens.
