Seven phases of marathon polling, spread over an entire month, and today it all comes to an end. But it is not over until it is over — for now, it's time for the exit poll results of 2019 — and for us to find out who's inching closer to the Prime Minister's chair.

As per the Election Commission of India's (ECI) directive, the media could conduct exit polls from 6.30 PM, May 19 onwards only, as under sub-section (1) of Section 126A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, conducting exit polls between 7 AM on April 11 and 6.30 PM on April 19 is prohibited.

The ECI even states that publishing or publicising the result of exit polls on print or via electronic media, or in any other form is also prohibited during the Lok Sabha 2019 elections.

In today's last phase of polling, a total of 59 constituencies across eight states went to vote. And over the seven phases of polling, millions of people voted for 543 Lok Sabha seats, between April 11 and May 19.

The ECI's role in the month-long polls was more or less like that of an umpire, keeping feuding political parties and their verbiage in check. There were bans on many prominent leaders of several parties, prohibiting them from addressing election rallies for varying periods of time, ranging from 48 to 72 hours. Yet, there seemed little stopping the angry rhetoric and often fatr too heated words this election saw.

But then, this dance of democracy wouldn't have been half as interesting if it wasn't for all this.

As billions wait with bated breath to watch what the exit polls predict — and who emerges a winner on May 23 — let's take you directly where all the action is happening right now.
