Manohar Parrikar has passed away at the age of 63 after battling cancer for some years. He was Goa's much loved chief minister who served his state over three terms. He was also India's defence minister from 2014-17.

Throughout his career, Mr Parrikar showed a tremendous fighting spirit, taking on the odds with pugnacious fearlessness. Known for his modern outlook and his passionate love for his state and country, Mr Parrikar was famed also for his rational views, his ethic of hard work - he served as CM throughout his severe illness - his reputation as an effective and highly professional administrator and his wit and candour.

In an era where these qualities are mostly visible by their absence across the political sphere, Mr Parrikar will be greatly missed.
