Ending speculation, Karnataka governor Vajubhai Vala has invited the BJP to prove its majority in the state legislature. The key to who forms the next government in Karnataka fell to the governor after elections verdict resulted in a hung Assembly.

While the BJP emerged as the single largest party, it fell short of a majority, winning 104 seats in the 222-member House. The Congress and the JD(S) managed to cross the halfway-mark, but there’s was a post-poll coalition. In such a scenario, whom the Governor invites to form the government – the single largest party or a cobbled-up collation – falls to his discretion.

Constitutional experts weigh in on whether Vala’s decision was right.
