The year 2020 snatched some gems of the Hindi film industry from us, one of the most prominent among them being Irrfan. The 53-year-old actor lost the battle to a colon infection on April 28, 2020, after battling a neuroendocrine tumour for two years.

Irrfan was born on this day (January 7) in Tonk, Rajasthan in 1963. With a number of commercial and critical accolades in his kitty, his final film appearance was in Angrezi Medium (2020) that was released weeks before his death.

This Homi Adajania-comedy drama is a sequel to Hindi Medium (2017), that again starred Irrfan in the lead role.

Angrezi Medium is about a doting father who wants to fulfil his daughter’s dream of studying in London, no matter what. Irrfan aces the performance as Champak Bansal, a widower based in Udaipur. Champak will go to any lengths to ensure his daughter Tarika "Taru" Bansal's (Radhika Madan) happiness. This is despite his own financial challenges, ongoing feud with his younger brother — Gopi Ghasiteram Bansal (Deepak Dobriyal) — over their ancestral sweet shop, and battling his own fears of losing Tarika.

The series of misadventures that eventually take Tarika to London are hilarious yet leave you on the edge of your seat as you root for her for the sake of her father. Irrfan aces nails it; you cannot but get a little emotional thinking of your own father as you see Champak’s unconditional love for Taru bitiya.

It is amazing how Irrfan is in his element in every scene, despite undergoing treatment while shooting for the film. You cannot isolate Irrfan from Champak as he breathes life into the character.
