Daily Recco, February 18: Emily in Paris is the perfect easy-breezy weekend binge

The bright rom-com that charms you out of the bleak reality of the pandemic-ridden world.

We say Paris and the mood that immediately conjures up in the mind is that of the City of Love, romance and poetry. Call it the atmosphere that the city exudes — the wine and cheese, the Wall of Love, a scenic sunset cruise along the Seine or an evening by the Eiffel Tower with a bottle of sauternes — there is no better place than this city in revving up your romance or a better setting for a rom-com. And that is what Darren Star — the maker of Sex and the City — creates in the Netflix series Emily in Paris.

The series follows 20-something Emily Cooper (Lily Collins), a quintessential American from Chicago, who is given an unexpected job opportunity that requires her to shift to Paris. Emily works as an executive for an American marketing company and is tasked with bringing an American point of view to Savoir — a venerable French company — who need an American perspective on marketing. For most of us, that is a dream job — travelling, exploring new cultures while sharing one’s own, and a life in one of the most beautiful cities on the planet. But not quite so for Emily, who has never fathomed a life outside Chicago and now finds herself on a plane to Paris.

The city of romance isn’t quite warm to Emily. Her French colleagues, led by Sylvie (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu) — the head at Savoir, aren’t particularly welcoming. The main grouse is that she is not a native and can’t speak French.

The series has all the elements you need to escape from the daunting and grim realities of the pandemic-ridden bleak world. And that is how all rom-com shows should be. Emily and all the other characters are lovable in their own right and yes, very relatable. You feel for Emily as you see her struggling to establish herself in the new land, forging new friendships, battling casual sexism and culture clashes, and dealing with a long-distance relationship. All this while juggling her career. You cheer for her at every step she succeeds and don’t mind the stereotypes that the series has quite a bit of.

Travel, romance, comedy, feminism and the fantastic French fashion — you name it and Emily in Paris has it all. The perfect easy-breezy binge on Netflix this coming weekend.
