Six reasons we loved the Emmys this year

#1. Jon Hamm:

Finally. After seven consecutive nominations, and no wins, the Mad Men lead star finally won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. And not only did he give a typically Jon Hamm speech, which meant understated and funny (there's been a terrible mistake, clearly), but he also made quite the entrance - climbing onto the stage and skipping the stairs, creating by far the most GIFable moment of the Emmys for all of his fans out there. But seriously, in an amazing seven seasons, Hamm's subtle inhabiting of one of television's most complex heroes was as heartbreaking as the ending was uplifting.

#2. Viola Davis: How To Get Away With Murder would be nothing without Viola Davis's stunning presence. And her complete transparency - which other woman will ever take off her makeup, her wig, her false eyelashes on camera and be who she is to her mirror? Well, if you haven't watched that scene in How To Get Away With Murder, you don't know the power of Shonda Rhimes. Only Davis deserved to win Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

#3. Amy Schumer:

I love it that the winner for Best Variety Sketch Series mixes the trivial with the truly important. She's funny without being self-important. She embraces sisterhood full-on - her win was a collaborative win, and few male comics (make that none) would ever acknowledge their co writers and co creators. She also embraces girlhood - note the nod to the woman who did her smoky eye makeup. And let's not even celebrate her big girl figure - for every sexist, sizeist, fattest person out there, take that! And go watch Trainwreck to see a powerful woman celebrate her cool friends and her even cooler humour without becoming too full of herself.

#4. Andy Samberg:

Oscars, here's an idea for the next host. Who doesn't love Andy Samberg? He's cute, especially after the haircut. He's funny. He's friends with every funny person who has ever walked through the portals of Saturday Night Live. And he does great comedy sketches - the one on watching every episode of every TV show was especially cool.

#5. Nathan Fillion:

The star of Castle has always had a cult following. And Samberg's skit showed why. Have you watched Castle, he asked Samberg, who then retreated to his TV watching cave. Clearly not.

#6. Tracy Morgan:

Can anyone do humour and pathos with such grace? Nope. The 30 Rock star has had a rough year but as he stood on his own two feet and soaked in the standing ovation, he ended a touching speech on a fun note - with a shout-out to all the women he would impregnate at the after party. Keeping it classy only to get trashy Tracy right at the end.
