Meal on wheels: Rahul daCunha captures Mumbai's dabbawalas

"

I have always been fascinated by the dabbawalas, or the tiffin carriers, of Mumbai.

"

Their artless job of collecting hot food in lunch boxes from people's homes in the morning and delivering them to the workplace by lunchtime is like a story of Mumbai itself.

"

They mostly deliver the lunches using bicycles or travelling in trains. This is one of the most effective systems of food delivery that has even piqued the Harvard Business School in the past.

"

What's most intriguing about them is the clockwork precision of these men.

"

Dressed in starch white clothes and donning a Nehru topi, one morning I followed them from their office in Dadar, onto the train, where they have a reserved compartment just for themselves, to their final destination, which is VT Station.

"

I fear for the disappearance of this community - their numbers are dwindling as people are rapidly changing jobs and more and more low-cost food options are sprouting all over the city.
