Why Shah Rukh Khan will always win some Bollywood award every year, Deepika Padukone a top contender

Bollywood award shows, just like movies, have had their own journey. Back in the days, well before Karan Johar’s couch came into being, these awards were the only place you’d have the top stars ascend. I remember sitting in front of the television, gleefully watching my favourite stars perform and get rewarded right through my childhood. Filmfare awards were one of the biggest nights of my year - I would watch the entire telecast without a blink. Oscars be damned; I’d have wanted Madhuri Dixit doing her dhak-dhak over it any day.

The situation now, unfortunately, is rather different. Over the past few years, I’ve lost count of the number of award functions we keep having with each one more painful to sit through than the other. These interchangeable shows have pretty much the same hosts (Karan Johar is rather popular here) and the same star acts nicely edited and shown, considering none of them perform live now. The funniest part is probably the number of award categories we have - forget the competition as every star who bothers to show up duly gets an award. And if you’re performing, you can assure yourself a minimum of two trophies for sure. Do these shows even have jury members anymore? I guess not, for there’s no other reason for films like Happy New Year being given awards and Farah Khan winning a trophy for her direction. Was it bad direction? Or was it misdirection? Whatever!

Is Shah Rukh Khan still the reigning King?

Aamir Khan decided to not take these award functions seriously a long while ago. The man is sure as heck intelligent as he pre-empted something we all are probably realising only now. You don’t need talent or good acting capabilities to win anything at these awards. If you make sure to attend any of these laughable shows, the organisers would happily fit your name into some or the other ridiculous category.

Jacqueline Fernandez won the "style diva" award somewhere because she was performing that night and let me not even begin on best actor comedy, drama, action, romance blah blah blah that certain award shows have to make sure Shah Rukh Khan wins every year for sure and Deepika Padukone is still a contender for the top slot.

Award nights are incomplete without the dancing divas.

The front row at these shows is the same bunch of people seated differently every year depending on who is dating whom at that point. These stars might not have time for anything else but will surely attend award shows to get their trophy. Some just attend if they’re being paid big-bucks to "perform" and the out-of-work types arrive to get clicked so they remain in public memory.

I even saw Sonal Chauhan at one of these shows and won’t be surprised if I see my neighbour there next. The shoddy editing of these shows for the TV version is the final nail in the coffin - the stars laugh exactly the same way on every joke, applaud looking in the same direction at every performance and sometimes manage to appear magically seated in the front row while they’re dancing on stage.

Queen was certainly the best performance by a female actor last year, but Kangana Ranaut hasn’t won any award so far because she chose to not attend any such award function - she doesn’t find them fair and just. I, too, now don’t want to watch these snooze-fests anymore; Deepika Padukone winning "best actor-female" trophies and horribly dressed stars posing for pictures is not my idea of an award show or even entertainment for that matter.
