As Bigg Boss Season 17 kicks off, 6 major differences between the reality show on TV and OTT

Bigg Boss Season 17 is here, and if you are one of those who are still thinking that you remember just seeing Bigg Boss and Elvish Yadav a month ago, let us clarify that it was Bigg Boss OTT (Over The Top), and the one that started yesterday (October 15) is Bigg Boss on TV. Both have the same host, superstar Salman Khan, but there are some key differences.

Bigg Boss on TV

We know that the days of television are almost over, as most of us don't watch it anymore or watch it very passively, but weirdly, the show that airs way past bedtime for Indians has time and again proven to break records when it comes to viewership - Bigg Boss.

But there are certain differences between both shows and here are some:

1. Platform

  • Bigg Boss is a television show aired on a traditional television channel.
Bigg Boss OTT is streamed exclusively on the digital platform Voot and Jio Cinema (from this year).

2. Audience interaction

  • Another key difference that comes with the small screen and the big screen of Bigg Boss on TV is that, for BB on TV, you end up watching it more passively with viewers watching the edited episodes on television.
  •  However, Bigg Boss OTT allowed viewers to watch the show 24/7 through live streaming and vote in real-time, giving them more influence over the game.
  • Also, part of the interactive set-up in the reality show's OTT version is the 'Janta (audience)' factor that gives the common man the uncommon power to pick contestants and their tenure in the house, as well as tasks and exit from the show.
  • In fact, BB OTT 2's season punch line also said, "Isbar Janta hai real boss (This time audience is the real boss)," simply indicating the power was more in the hands of the audience.

3. Time duration

  • Bigg Boss on TV typically runs for more than three months, like 97-105 days.
  • Bigg Boss OTT was a shorter, condensed version of the show with 55-60 days.

4. Content and censorship

Now let's talk about the key difference between the two - Censorship

Bigg Boss on TV is subject to censorship and content regulations. It is highly edited and calculated what goes in front of the audience. For instance, the entire day of the contestants is summed up in an hour; however, when it comes to OTT, the censorship is not that strong.

For instance, two contestants, Jad Hadid and Akanksha Puri had created a stir inside the Bigg Boss OTT 2 house with their kiss. The two shared a French kiss inside the house as cameras focused on them, which was well shown on the OTT. Later, the act was condemned by Salman Khan, who apologized to the audience.

5. Contestant selection

  • Contestants in the TV version of Bigg Boss often include a mix of celebrities from various fields, such as film, television, and sports.
  • On the other hand, Bigg Boss OTT had a mix of well-known figures and internet influencers, reflecting a younger and more digitally savvy contestant pool.

6. Prize money

Bigg Boss on TV typically has a larger prize money amount, often in the range of around 50 lakh. However, since OTT is just gaining an audience, it has a smaller prize amount. For instance, this year's Big Boss OTT winner Elvish Yadav won a sum of 25 lakh.
