The 2023 Grammys has been one hell of a roller-coaster ride. From unexpected snubs to wins, it has seen it all. Apart from Beyonce creating records with 32 wins so far and breaking that of the late Georg Solti for the most wins in Grammys history (31), there is actor Viola Davis who has also created history.
What is the EGOT status and why is it so special?
Viola Davis won the Grammy for the audio recording of her memoir Finding Me at the 2023 Grammy Awards premiere ceremony on Sunday, ahead of the main awards show. Viola's Finding Me, as she describes, is her story.
With this win, Davis has achieved the elite rank of an EGOT winner - an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony award.
The honour follows her Emmy win for How to Get Away With Murder (2015), an Oscar for Fences (2017), and a Tony for both King Hedley II (2001) and Fences (2010).
EGOT: The Grand Slam of Showbiz
People who have won all four of the major American entertainment prizes are known as EGOTs, which stands for Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards.
These honours recognise exceptional work in television, recording, film, and Broadway theatre.
