The 2023 Grammys has been one hell of a roller-coaster ride. From unexpected snubs to wins, it has seen it all. Apart from Beyonce creating records with 32 wins so far and breaking that of the late Georg Solti for the most wins in Grammys history (31), there is actor Viola Davis who has also created history.

  • With her first Grammy, Viola Davis is now an EGOT.

What is the EGOT status and why is it so special?

Viola Davis won the Grammy for the audio recording of her memoir Finding Me at the 2023 Grammy Awards premiere ceremony on Sunday, ahead of the main awards show. Viola's Finding Me, as she describes, is her story.

This is my story, from a crumbling apartment in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to the stage in New York City, and beyond. This is the path I took to finding my purpose but also my voice in a world that didn't always see me.

With this win, Davis has achieved the elite rank of an EGOT winner - an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony award.

I wrote this book to honour the 6-year-old Viola — to honour her life, her joy, her trauma, her everything. And it has been such a journey. I just EGOT.
- Davis, in her acceptance speech

The honour follows her Emmy win for How to Get Away With Murder (2015), an Oscar for Fences (2017), and a Tony for both King Hedley II (2001) and Fences (2010).

EGOT: The Grand Slam of Showbiz

People who have won all four of the major American entertainment prizes are known as EGOTs, which stands for Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards.

These honours recognise exceptional work in television, recording, film, and Broadway theatre.

  • Till now, only 18 individuals have received this honour, with Robert Lopez being a double EGOT - a person who has won all four awards at least twice.
  • Previously, only two black women have achieved this honour. Davis is the third Black woman to earn this title.
