It's that time of year when cricket fans eagerly set their sights on the 10 cricket franchises as they make crucial moves during the auction to acquire top talents for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season.

What

  • The IPL auction commands significant attention annually, particularly the 'mega auction' in 2022, amplifying its popularity.

  • This event has become a tradition, attracting a massive audience while teams strategically build their squads for the forthcoming IPL season.

  • The auction for the 2024 season begins today at 1pm at the Coca Cola arena in Dubai.

How the auction works

  • In the IPL Auction 2024, players are categorized into 19 sets based on their skills, including batters, allrounders, fast bowlers, spinners, and wicketkeepers. The selection sequence alternates between experienced and new players.

  • Some players are swiftly introduced through a special lane in the initial sets, followed by a break allowing teams to select players from the remaining sets.

  • The IPL Governing Council then intervenes for a rapid 'accelerated round' of bidding, swiftly determining the fate of players.

  • Even if a player is initially overlooked, there's an opportunity after this round. Teams still having available slots and budget can submit new lists, providing overlooked talents another chance to secure a place in a team.

How many players are up for auction?

  • In the IPL 2024 auction, 332 players signed up, down from the original 1166.
  • The ten franchises picked 300 players, cutting down the list by 833.
  • Among them, 214 are Indian, 116 are foreign, with 116 capped and 215 uncapped players.
  • Two players are from associate nations.
  • Overall, 77 slots will be filled across the teams.

Who has the heaviest purse?

  • The Gujarat Titans boast the largest purse, standing at Rs 38.15 crore, providing ample resources to fill eight slots.
  • Following closely, Sunrisers Hyderabad holds the second-highest purse of Rs 34 crore for six slots.
  • Kolkata Knight Riders secure the third spot with Rs 32.7 crore, intending to fill 12 slots.
  • Lucknow SuperGiants hold the lowest purse at Rs 13.15 crore.
