1979, Prudential World Cup, Manchester (Group stage)

  • In their first-ever encounter, Sri Lanka triumphed over India by 47 runs. 
  • Sunil Wettimuny, Roy Dias, and Duleep Mendis contributed with impressive half-centuries to set a target of 238 in 60 overs, losing five wickets. Mohinder Amarnath took three wickets for India.
  • In response, India was dismissed for 191 runs in 54.1 overs, with no batter scoring more than 40 runs. 
  • Sri Lanka's Somachandra De Silva and Tony Opatha claimed three wickets each.

 1996, Wills World Cup, Kolkata (Semi-final)

  • In the second World Cup encounter between Sri Lanka and India, Sri Lanka won. They set a target of 251 runs, with notable contributions from Aravinda de Silva and Roshan Mahanama. 
  • During India's innings, there was a disruption caused by angry spectators, resulting in the match being awarded to Sri Lanka by the referee, Clive Lloyd. 
  • Sri Lanka went on to win their first World Cup trophy by defeating Australia in the finals.

2003, ICC ODI World Cup, Johannesburg (Super Six)

  • India achieved their biggest win against Sri Lanka in the World Cup.
  • They scored 292 runs, mainly thanks to Sachin Tendulkar's 97 runs off 120 balls, and contributions from Virender Sehwag and Sourav Ganguly. 
  • Sri Lanka managed only 109 runs, with five players scoring zero. 
  • Javagal Srinath and Ashish Nehra took four wickets each, and India won by 183 runs.


2019, ICC ODI World Cup, Leeds (Group Stage)

  • In India's most recent World Cup showdown with Sri Lanka, they clinched a resounding victory. 
  • Sri Lanka set a 265-run target, with Angelo Mathews scoring 113 from 128 balls and Lahiru Thirimanne contributing 53 from 68 balls. 
  • Jasprit Bumrah took three wickets for India.
  • KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma, the Indian openers, shone on that occasion, each securing centuries. This propelled India to a dominant seven-wicket victory over Sri Lanka.

 2011, ICC ODI World Cup, Wankhede (Final)

  • The last time both the teams faced each other at Wankhede Stadium for a World Cup match was in 2011, which saw India win the competition with an iconic six by then captain MS Dhoni. 
  • In 50 overs, Sri Lanka set a competitive target of 275 runs, led by skipper Mahela Jayawardene's unbeaten 103 off 88 balls.
  • India's second innings began poorly, losing early wickets of Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar. Nonetheless, Gautam Gambhir's composed 97 off 122 balls stabilised the innings. 
  • Captain MS Dhoni's outstanding 91 off 79 balls steered India to their second ODI World Cup victory.
