Five reasons #RahulReturns is straight out of Bollywood

The jubilation and celebration on Rahul Gandhi’s return is surely the most notable thing to watch out for. The news channels are busy analysing the Congress scenario after the return of the crown prince while the twitteratis are busy trolling and spreading memes as the hashtag #RahulReturns continues to trend on social media.

The hardcore film buff in me could not prevent equating Rahul Gandhi’s comeback with some of the iconic melodramatic scenes in films and desi TV shows. Bollywood and Indian telly has no dearth of similar situation where the family and loved ones cried and longed for a missing person.

We take out five best moments from our long list of melodramatic films and TV shows, which are equivalent to Rahul baba’s lost and found saga.

1. #Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham

Teary eyed Jaya Bachchan waits for son.

Watch out for the sobbing mom decked up in diamonds waiting for her son (Shah Rukh Khan) who returns home after completing education in a glorified foreign college. Mommy (with her welled eyes) opens the door, the boy steps out off a private chopper and runs in slow motion towards her. Back in 2001, the audience were choked (a few giggled too), just as some loyal Congress leaders are getting emotional as they appear on the camera, making statement in support of Gandhi junior.

2. #Karan Arjun: A hysterical Rakhi longing for her sons

The film, based on rebirth formula of brothers, is the most memorable one that describes the pain of a mother waiting for her sons to come back. “Mere Karan Arjun ayenge,” was a strong dialogue that depicted the pain of people left behind after a person goes missing.

Didn’t we hear Congress members oozing similar emotions?

What happened when Karan Arjun reappeared? The rising stars SRK and Salman Khan were all ready to get even with their opponents. Badle ki aag, you know?

3. #Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi: Tulsi Viraani breaks into a weird smile as she sees Mihir back

Back in 2000, when mother of all soaps Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi had taken over the small screen, a big section of audience slipped into depression when the protagonist Mihir Virani (played by Amar Upadhyay) was declared dead. True to her form, producer Ekta Kapoor had made optimum use of the tried and tested memory loss and dead man walking formula to keep the ratings up.

Tulsi Virani (played by our HRD Minister Smriti Irani (then Malhotra), runs towards Mihir (suffering amnesia) with a strong expression of disbelief, as he returns.

We can expect our news channels to capture similar expressions on the faces of Rahul Gandhi’s followers. The background score Ram Ram Jai Radha Ram is strictly not for Rahul Gandhi, since it is patented by their opponents VHP and gang.

4. #Virasat : Anil Kapoor returns to his modest village

The long haired, London-educated Anil Kapoor (referred to as "Kunwar saab") comes back to his under developed village after a long gap only to see the jubilation among the villagers. Apt situation as the Congress party regales the homecoming of RaGa.

“Rajeshwar Aaya, Apna Kunwar Aaya,” crooned Tabu, dancing vigorously. Replace Tabu with any of the Congress leaders and the situation looks the same.

5. #Jab We Met: Kareena Kapoor returns home after nine months

The scene from Imtiaz Ali’s Jab We Met is perfectly matched with Rahul Gandhi’s life. Kareena returns home after supposedly eloping with boyfriend Shahid Kapoor. But, the family comprising parents, cousins and number of relatives are busy rejoicing and dancing, instead of questioning the girl about her past or getting mad at her for her irresponsible act. Isn’t it close to Rahul’s life?
